Hot summer days are almost here and it’s Cinco de Mayo—time to break out the tequila! But there’s more to this zesty spirit than frosty margaritas, limes and salt-rimmed glasses. Distilled from the fermented juice of the blue agave plant (which is found primarily in Mexico), true tequilas are made from 100-percent blue agave. And tequila enthusiasts know that the best tequilas are for sipping. Not yet a connoisseur of premium tequilas? Here’s some Tequila 101 along with some examples of top-rated tequilas to look for…Remember that, just like a fne wine, the longer a tequila is aged, the more premium it is considered and the more expensive the spirit.

Blanco or Plata
(White or Silver)
This tequila will have the purest taste and smell of agave due to the fact that it is bottled right after the distillation process or aged in stainless steel tanks for less than 60 days. It is also the variety you’ll most likely drink in your margarita.
