Learning to love yourself is important for self-actualization and self-confidence. In fact, research shows that self-love can lead to healthier and happier lives overall. Therefore, it’s not selfish to take care of yourself because it’s actually essential—when you love yourself, you take control of the life you want to lead.Learning to love yourself is important for self-actualization and self-confidence. Local designer and illustrator Amy Zhang is making self-care become a reality for everyone. She is the founder of the Self Care Card Deck, a beautifully designed self-care tool that promotes genuine human connection and a way to focus on one’s health and wellness.

“In the midst of trying to adjust to lockdown life, I started wondering if I could do or create something to alleviate some stress and bring a little light to a difficult time,” she explains. “As I thought more about it, I decided that I wanted to share something that could ease you into the practice, something that is positive and encouraging, and that takes some of the decision-making out of the process.”

Live Happy and Healthy

Zhang’s cards provide people with a “gentle nudge” to slow down and take time for themselves—something we tend to overlook these days. “So many of us, and obviously not just small business owners, have a voice that tells us we could be trying harder, working longer, doing more. The hustle mindset is real, and while it can do wonders to drive success and growth, it can also be a huge source of stress.”

As we all know, Denver is one of the most desirable cities to live and work— and it’s also the perfect destination to practice self-care. “If you want to unplug and spend a day in nature, there are countless mountains and trails and parks available. If it’s crafting you’re into, there are plenty of local shops where you can stock up on supplies and even sign up for a class. [Or] if your self-care mission is socializing with friends, there are so many trivia nights, book clubs, and coffee shop hangouts to choose from. There’s truly something for everyone.”

What’s Inside the Deck

Individually designed notes inside with creative “prompts” are meant to be reminders to slow down. For example, hang up new art, light your favorite candle, and treat yourself to your favorite fancy coffee are intentionally easy and quick things to execute. “The point is not to tell you what to do, but rather to create space for you to take time for yourself and breathe.”
