Chenango, Centennial, Arapahoe County

Vintage of neighborhood: Developed as an equestrian community, this covenant-controlled area has 234 homes, most with two-acre lots.
Amenities: Open space is abundant, with plenty of riding and walking trails and a large community open space with tennis and basketball courts, a riding ring, a playground, a gazebo with picnic tables, and space for community events. In the coveted Cherry Creek School District, Chenango is 20 minutes from Park Meadows and 30 minutes from downtown Denver.

Vintage of neighborhood: Home to several orchards in the early 1900s, this area still had many farmers in the 1930s and ’40s, with a mix of suburbanites coming for the summer. It was incorporated in 1950 after residents worried that Denver development would threaten their farming lifestyle.
Amenities: Nearby Cherry Creek State Park is home to wildlife, boating, fishing, biking and running trails, concerts, and a large dog park. Fiddler’s Green is the metro area’s largest outdoor amphitheater, and the nearby Denver Tech Center has multiple large employers and restaurants, including Shanahan’s, Ocean Prime, Hapa Sushi, and Jade.

Lone Tree, Douglas County

Vintage of neighborhood: Lone Tree became a Home Rule city in 1998. Originally a much smaller area around Park Meadows, it now has more than 13,000 residents.
Amenities: There’s tons of shopping in the area, including Park Meadows Mall. Nearby parks include Sweetwater Park, which has an annual Independence Day celebration, and Bluffs Regional Park Trail, a 2.7-mile loop trail for hiking, running, and horseback riding with views of Denver and the Front Range. There’s also the Arnold Palmer–designed Lone Tree Golf Club, Lone Tree Rec Center, and Lone Tree Arts Center. with performances and classes yearround. The historic Schweiger Ranch adds a touch of history. Light rail stops provide access to the rest of the Denver metro area.

Willow Springs, Morrison, Jefferson County

Hilltop, Denver

Vintage of neighborhood: First formed in 1893 and developed heavily in the 1920s, this neighborhood takes up just one square mile. Unlike many historic Denver neighborhoods, it was planned around car travel, not streetcar travel. Homes represent a mix of styles, from Tudor to midcentury modern. Denver entrepreneur George Cranmer’s 10,000-square-foot Italian villa was built in 1917 and sits across from Cranmer Park.
Amenities: Tree-lined streets and mountain views define the neighborhood’s character, with Cranmer Park, Crestmoor Park, Burns Park, and Robinson Park (known for great sledding) offering access to green space. Locally owned Park Burger and High Point Creamery are nearby, plus many stores, including the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.

Bonnie Brae, Denver

Vintage of neighborhood: The neighborhood, which means “pleasant hill” in Gaelic, was developed in the 1920s as part of the town of South Denver. After the Great Depression, development continued, with many homes built in the Art Moderne style. The construction of Ellipse Park (now known as Bonnie Brae Park) helped establish the neighborhood in 1936, with more homes built after WWII during the construction boom.
Amenities: Enjoy a waffle cone at Bonnie Brae Ice Cream or a bite at the historic Bonnie Brae Tavern. It’s a charming neighborhood to walk around in with the family, and it also borders Washington Park and the Cherry Creek and Country Club neighborhoods.

Ken Caryl, Jefferson County

Vintage of neighborhood: Interesting history is this area’s defining characteristic, with The Bradford House Hotel and a toll road for pioneers built in 1859. John Shaffer, industrialist and newspaper tycoon, built a summer house, now known as the Manor House (an event center), at the highest point of his 10,000 acres. The name Ken Caryl comes from the names of his two sons. Johns-Manville Corp. acquired the land for its world headquarters in 1971, and in 1974, the Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association was formed. By 1977, 150 families had moved into the new development, which now has 32,448 residents.
Amenities: Twenty miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails wind through the area, and there are 6,000 acres of open space. An equestrian center offers indoor and outdoor boarding, riding arenas, and lessons. There’s also the Ken-Caryl Ranch Community Center, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and three swimming pools. Lockheed Martin has a facility here.
